INDIGENOUS AUTONOMY - 1

An art and design research project in collaboration with, The ONWARD Project, Land Artist Hans Baumann, Archaeologist and Consultant Ron Maldonado and the Media Design Practices at Art Center College of Design to work on Indigenous Autonomy: A Virtual Frontier for Southwest Sovereigns.

It is community-based art initiative conducted by Hans Baumann and The ONWARD Project. The background of the project was based on the archival material of the 1930’s Rainbow Bridge Monument Valley Expedition accumulated by The ONWARD Project.

This project communicates Navajo experiences of Los Angeles with the use of community outreach, site-specific research and VR technology. Under the artist-lead of Hans Baumann this project reimagines how cross-cultural exchange can foster social visibility and empower Native voices, places and stories in the present. The intention was to addresses long-standing narratives of marginalization and erasure amongst Native peoples and introducing digital storytelling as a play to reframe identity and preserving cultural memory.
